Hinnerk Scheper's Colour Orientation Scheme ...
Gropius

I'm just reading the Taschen booklet on Walter Gropius (see image), which I have on loan from my son. If you haven't seen much of Gropius or Bauhaus architecture, this is not a bad start. An illustration on page 37 shows Hinnerk Scheper's Colour Orientation Scheme for the new Bauhaus building in Dessau, opened in December 1926. Scheper became the director of the workshop for wall painting and the colours identified the various areas of the building. "Colour should not serve to cover up the wall—it should reflect the character of the architecture" said Scheper in 1925.

I have just sampled the colours as they are not very clear on the various versions available on the internet.

The paperback version of Gropius (Taschen Basic Art Series) by Gilbert Lupfer and Paul Sigel (Taschen, 2006) is available from Amazon and other outlets.
